BAND OF BUILDERS

Band of Builders (BoB) is a registered charity which completes practical projects to help members of the UK construction industry who are battling illness or injury. The fast-growing charity, which was formed in 2016, already has more than 43,000 members from across the construction community who willingly volunteer their time for free to work on projects across the UK. These can range from simple renovations, fixing leaking roofs or landscaping gardens, through to building extensions for people who require complete home remodelling to accommodate wheelchair use.

The charity also calls on the support of suppliers and merchants who donate materials for projects. Members of the Band of Builders community will often travel for hours to be part of projects, such as a recent one in North Wales which took 26 days to complete and involved more than 70 tradespeople. BoB also runs the Big Brew - an annual event in October that encourages tradespeople to come together and talk over a cuppa in a bid to remove the taboo around mental health in the sector – at a time when the suicide rate of UK construction workers is estimated to be as high as two people every day.

In March 2022 it launched a free counselling service for tradespeople and it is also funding the training of 150 mental health awareness courses - designed primarily for builders merchants staff - as they are often the first line of support for tradespeople.
